General Periodical Indices and Guides

• The New York Times Index. New York : New York Times Co. Semimonthly with annual accumulations, Vol. 1 (Jan./Mar. 1913)- . SERIALS .N42yataix.  A subject index to the news stories in the New York Times. A good way to find the location of a news article that was covered by the New York Times.

• Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature. Minneapolis : H. W. Wilson Co., 1905-. SERIALS R227rsg.  Easy to use and stays current in its coverage of popular periodical titles.

• Social Sciences and Humanities Index. New York : H. W. Wilson Co., Quarterly (March 1913- bimonthly except July) with accumulations covering one or several years. SERIALS .So13asch.  Indexes over 200 scholarly periodicals in the area of humanities and social sciences.

Religious Periodical Indices and Guides

• The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index. Haverford, PA: Catholic Library Association. v. 1- 1930/33- SERIALS .C286pei.  This index covers over 150 journals that deliberately minimize overlap with RIO. If you want wider coverage for your research consult both RIO and The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index.

• Christian Periodical Index. Cedarville, Ohio: Association of Christian Librarians. 1976- . SERIALS .C462iaper.  This index provides bibliographic citations to evangelical journals and magazines. It covers approximately 100 titles of which 67 are not covered by RIO.

• Index to Religious Periodical Literature. Chicago, American Theological Library Association. 1946-1977 LATER TITLE: Religion Index One. 1977- SERIALS .In2daaxr.  Religion Index One (RIO) is the major American religious periodical index. It covers over 400 journals that deal with issues in all areas of theology. Note: RIO is available for a computer search via the Library’s system. Click on the Religion Database.

• Religious Periodicals of the United States: Academic and Scholarly Journals. edited by Charles H. Lippy. Westport, Conn.: Greenwood Press, 1986. Reference Collection PN4888.R4 L5 1986.  Surveys more than 100 religious periodicals describing their editorial viewpoint, publication history, title changes, index, etc.

• A Scholar's Guide to Academic Journals in Religion. by James Dawsey. Metuchen, N.J.: Scarecrow Press, 1988. Reference Collection BL48 .D33 1988.  A good introduction into the world of religious journals. It organizes 530 journals into 33 categories.
