Biblical Counseling

  • Competent to Counsel. Powlison, David. Burlington, NC: New Growth Press, 2007. General Collection BV4012 .P68 2008

    •  The Christian Counselor's Manual. Adams, Jay E. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, 1973. General Collection BV4012.2 .A3 1973.  This book is the companion volume to "Competent to Counsel."

  • Competent to Counsel: Introduction to Nouthetic Counseling. Adams, Jay E.   Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 1971. General Collection BV4012.2 .A323.  This book was key in launching nouthetic counseling with a polemic against secular psychology/psychotherapy. It insists that the Scripture is sufficient, as used by the Holy Spirit, to heal the soul (i.e. the process of sanctification).

  •  Introduction to Biblical Counseling: A Basic Guide to the Principles and Practice of Counseling. MacArthur, John and Wayne Mack, eds.  Irving, TX: Word Books, 1994.  General Collection BV4012 .M32 1994

Other Resources

  • Invitation to the Septuagint. Jobes, Karen H. and Moisés Silva. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker, 2000. General Collection BS744 .J63 2000.  This book is the only true elementary introduction to the LXX. A glossary of key terms and an annotated bibliography are appended to the text. The end of every chapter contains helpful tips for further study.

  • The Septuagint in Context: Introduction to the Greek Version of the Bible. Marcos, Natalio Fernández. Translated by Wilfred G. E. Watson. Leiden: Brill, 2000. General Collection BS38 .F4713 2000.  Marcos’ text is technical but is still best deemed as an introductory book. Especially helpful is his insight into the classical roots of the LXX—a dimension of research that is often overlooked by seminary students. A glossary is appended to the text.

  • An Introduction to the Old Testament in Greek. Swete, Henry Barclay. Cambridge: University Press, 1900. General Collection BS738 .S8 1914.  This work includes references and citations to Hellenistic literature, especially patristic texts that are pertinent for LXX research. Also the book contains a list of important manuscripts for the study of the LXX. Knowledge of Greek and Latin is a prerequisite to perusal.
