Introduction & Orientation

What Is It?

This research bibliography and guide intends to cover the major areas of study in The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and to provide a broad overview of the materials available for research in those fields. Using this guide will help you start your research by focusing your attention on major reference and research tools.

The Development of the SBTS Research Guide

In the past, this guide was updated as the students of the Doctoral Research Seminar surveyed, reviewed, and appraised the primary reference works in their respective fields of specialization.

Purposes

A Starting Point for Theological Research

We have no desire for this to be a one-stop clearing house for theological research. Rather, we hope this guide is comprehensive enough to help you begin your research and focus your future research more directly and efficiently, but still cursory enough to be manageable and navigable without too much confusion or difficulty.

Dynamically Updated and Current

Each semester at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, new doctoral students are required to take the Doctoral Research Seminar. As one aspect of that seminar, the library is invited to present an introduction to library research. The traditional assignment has been for these students to prepare an annotated bibliography of the major reference works in their respective fields of specialization and to offer recommendations for new works which have yet to be added to the guide. This result was a static and semiannually updated Research Guide.

This new format is indicative of the Boyce Centennial Library's desire to embrace emerging technologies as we endeavor to transform the library from a static silo of information into a participatory and dynamically involved resource for the seminary community.

A Broad Overview

Because this guide covers research tools corresponding to all the primary departments of the Seminary's School of Theology, the task of collating a comprehensive guide would simply be prohibitively monumental. Undoubtedly, this guide will grow with use and its purpose as a "broad overview" will need redefinition. For the present, however, we invite you to use this guide with the understanding that it is not comprehensive.
